Commercial Permit Tabards – 31st January 2012

TROT, together with the Forestry Commission, are currently in the process of changing the means of identification for our commercial permit holders, i.e., riding schools, trekking centres, etc.

Commercial permit holders will in future be provided with escort tabards rather than hatbands. The tabards will be used on escorted rides and will help to improve identification for these organisations together with ensuring all insurance and public liability requirements are covered.

If you have any questions on this new system please don’t hesitate to contact Donna in the TROT office on 01622 735599.

The Denge – KE10 and FC17 (20/01/2012)

One of our members was recently involved in a near miss with a number of motorcyclists who were riding recklessly in the Forest. This incident was reported to the police and they attended the scene but unfortunately were unable to locate the motorcyclists.

Please be aware of this incident when riding and it is important to continue to report any such incidents to both the police and the TROT office. The police number for non emergencies is 101 or 999 if it is an emergency. Please make a note of the incident number and let the TROT office know by e-mailing us on info@tollrides.org.uk.

If you are able to get registration numbers of the bikes or any transporters this will help the police. However only do this if it is safe to do so and do nothing that could endanger either yourself or your horse.

FC08 Bedgebury Forest(16/01/2012)

We have been contacted by the Forestry Commission informing us of updates on box parking together with information on harvest work taking place in Bedgebury Forest.

Please CLICK HERE for a site map which shows the access all TROT riders must use when coming to Bedgebury. As always you will require a standard Forestry Commission key for access through the barrier at the office and into the box park itself. I have also attached information on directions to the box park.

Please be aware that horse boxes are not permitted to park anywhere on Park Lane (the main road that runs through Bedgebury) to unload. The Forestry Commission have recently had problems with boxes parked in front of barriers, in the small car park designated for cars only and opposite Foresters Cottage which the Forestry Commission reserve as a timber stacking area. The only area permitted for parking for horse boxes is in the designated box park as shown in the map AVAILABLE HERE.

In addition we have just been told about some harvesting work that is taking place from today in Bedgebury. Please accept our apologies for the short notice but the Forestry Commission has informed us this work should not affect your use of the bridle ways. However please be aware they may need to put in diversions and trail closures within the Forest.

Bramshill Forests (03/01/2012)

The local hunt is expected to go through Bramshill on Wednesday the 22nd February 2012

Tilgate Forest Rhododendron Clearance (24/10/11)

FC will be carrying out rhododendron clearance at Tilgate Forest. This will affect areas both north and south of the M23.

Signs have already gone up in this area to advise people that work is imminent. FC have not applied for a closure of the wood but are asking that people pay due care and attention to the contractors as they work. They will be largely extracting the rhododendron with an excavator but mulching work and chainsaw operators will also be used.

Please click HERE to view the areas affected.

St. Leonards Forest FC33 (FC04) - Forestry key needed (19/09/11)

The Forestry Commission has informed TROT they are constructing a lockable barrier at the entrance to the car park of St. Leonards Forest. This is to stop the illegal dumping of rubbish in the car park. The barrier can be opened with a forestry key. If you do not have a key please contact the TROT office on 01622 735599 and we will send you one (£15 deposit payable). This gate will be locked from 1st October 2011.

Tilgate Forest FC34 (FC02) - Mulching (19/09/11)

Mulching will take place over 5/6 days - Please click here to see map. Signs and tape will be put up to warn people but the machine will be localised and hope that the impact on use will be limited

Forest Fires Crowthorne Woods FC24)

Crowthorne Woods (FC24) are inaccessible due to recent forest fires. Please avoid this area.

Tilgate Forest FC02 - Route change

Tilgate Down Hill Mountain Bikers Club now lease a small area to the west of the main powerlines. They have created trails and divert down hill riding from the wider forest. No horse riding is permitted in this area. General warning and boundary signs will be posted, which should make this area clearer. The club do appreciate that at this time it may not be apparent and some riders may have inadvertently wandered through without realising. Please click here to see a PDF of the Tilgate map.

Bedgebury Box Park Closure - FC08

The Forestry Commission have advised that the road leading to the box park at Bedgebury Pinetum will be closed and inaccessible on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th March for essential re surfacing works.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Why should I buy a permit to ride in the Forest?

  • The Forestry Commission manages woodlands to achieve a wide range of objectives, including conservation, recreation and timber production. TROT is a non-profit making charity with local knowledge and contacts that administer the horseriding permit system on behalf of the Forestry Commission.

  • Apart from Public Rights of Way all Forestry Commission access for horses in the South East is by permit only. This is due to the high demand for recreational use of the Forests by manydifferent user groups.

  • Some Forestry Commission woods are managed on a lease and not all landowners are happy to allow access to riders. If riders abuse the use of the Forests and refuse to take on the responsibility of a permit, it is possible that access for horses will be denied.

  • Your insurance may be invalid if you do not have an official permit.

  • Fees from permits can be channelled back into conservation and recreation projects. Riders permit fees help to provide safe off road riding and maintain facilities in good condition.

  • By purchasing a permit, you are helping to promote riding in the Forests. You have a voice and the chance to be consulted and informed on access for horses.

  • Your Permit to the forests provides you with a Box Park Sticker that also allows you FREE parking (with your family and dog!) in all of the forest car parks.
